Malaysia is blessed with several grand festivities throughout the Gregorian calendar, making it one of the most diverse nations in the world. The different holidays, like the recent Chinese New Year celebration, provide ample opportunities for local brands and entrepreneurs to monetise and market their services to the masses. In fact, about a week after Christmas, you could already witness lanterns being hung and shopping malls surrounded by percussion-heavy oriental-themed tunes marking the arrival of the Year of the Ox.
The continuation of the pandemic this year has affected celebrations and resulted in many businesses suffering losses due to dine-in restrictions. For restaurants specialising in Chinese cuisines, the usual surge of profit gained during the reunion dinners or family gatherings is impacted by the implementation of the much-needed standard operating procedures (SOPs). What was once a vibrant sight filled with laughter and loud jokes amongst family members is now replaced with empty round tables and a line-up of food delivery services instead.
The change was substantial for Imran Audi, the founder of Mi Familia — a cosy Chinese Muslim café located in Cyberjaya. Built out of his love for food and family traditions, Imran, like many other restaurateurs, had to quickly adapt to survive. To continue their passion of serving good food to their loyal customers, a change of strategy was put into action. The Audi family swiftly connected with online delivery services and engaged their help to deliver dishes straight to their customers’ doorstep.
“MCO affected us drastically as customers couldn’t dine in. Because of Foodpanda and Lalamove, we were still able to generate sales through online deliveries,” said Imran.
However, turning to online delivery services only tackles one problem. Restaurants like Mi Familia have loyal customers from places outside of their delivery radius. Their inability to serve those customers forced them to be even more creative.
Imran delegated a few of his staff to take over their delivery service to serve customers beyond Cyberjaya — a strategy which provides him with the opportunity to ensure that none of his staff are out of work, especially during this time that is difficult for most.
“During MCO, our workers assisted on the delivery service front, so that we could reach customers outside of Cyberjaya.”
Popular for their Hainanese chicken rice, ginger beef hor fun and nasi lemak ayam pandan, Mi Familia proves to be more than just a café. It’s also a destination for food enthusiasts to come together and experience recipes passed down for generations. Malaysian foodies with a zeal for authentic Chinese cuisines would opt for Imran’s Mi Familia for a dose of nostalgia, culture and mouth-watering food.
